Maldives cooking gas refills cut from 7 November

Maldive Gas will put less gas in each cylinder from Saturday 7 November 2026: 7kg in a 10kg cylinder, 14kg in a 22kg and 31kg in a 45kg.

Maldive Gas, a subsidiary of the State Trading Organisation (STO), will temporarily reduce the amount of gas in each cylinder from Saturday 7 November 2026, the company said in a statement.

New amounts per cylinder

From 7 November, refills will be:

  • 10kg cylinders: 7kg of gas

  • 22kg cylinders: 14kg of gas

  • 45kg cylinders: 31kg of gas

The price per kg does not change. Customers are charged the existing rate for the weight actually supplied, so they pay for less gas per refill.

Why the company is doing it

Maldive Gas gave rising international gas prices and difficulties importing gas to the Maldives as the reasons. It said the aim is to keep supply uninterrupted.

No date for a return to normal

The company did not say when normal quantities will return. Similar restrictions were also in place earlier in 2026, in March.

Longer-term fix: more storage

Maldive Gas said work is under way to expand national gas storage. When it is finished, the Maldives could store three months of supply at once. The company calls this a long-term solution to recurring shortages.
