Four employees of a café in Hulhumalé were taken to hospital after a gas cylinder caught fire on Sunday morning, police said.

The fire broke out at around 10am on 1 November at Marinate café in Hulhumalé Phase 2. All four injured are foreign workers employed at the café.

Police said none of them suffered serious injuries, and no customers were hurt.

People at the café put the fire out before police and the MNDF Fire and Rescue Service arrived, according to police.

The fire did not damage the café building or its kitchen equipment, police said. Several plates were broken as customers rushed out after hearing a loud noise.

Police have not said what caused the cylinder to catch fire.
