The Maldives have won the championship twice. They beat India 1–0 in the 2008 final, and beat India again, 2–1, in the 2018 final in Dhaka, the city hosting this year's tournament.

The Maldives were also runners-up in 1997, 2003 and 2009. India have won the title nine times, more than any other team, and are the defending champions after winning in 2023.
